Australian parents warned of horrific injuries as result of sour lollies
news.com.au By Lauren Ferri 26 Apr, 2022 11:44 AM..Parents are being warned about the dangers of sour lollies after a young Perth boy suffered burns to his tongue. Shocking images of the child's burns were posted to social media, showing layers of his tongue blistered from the product's high acidity.
Safety and first aid service CPR Kids posted the photos, saying it hoped to spread awareness around the potentially dangerous treats. Sour candy packaging often stipulates that children under 4 shouldn't eat the sweets and that consuming multiple lollies quickly can cause 'temporary irritation to sensitive tongues and mouths' CPR Kids wrote.
It is not known which brand of lolly the child in the photo consumed, but CPR Kids said Warheads and TNT are brands consumed widely across the country. We understand that the labels come with warnings.

Second port worker death reinforces need for inquiry - unions
Jonty Dine -26/04/2022..The death of a Lyttelton port worker is further evidence of the need for an urgent inquiry into port safety, unions say. The Lyttelton Port Company worker was killed on a ship that was being loaded with coal for export at Cashin Quay on Monday morning.
Maritime New Zealand is investigating the death, which is the second at the country's ports in less than a week. Stevedore and father of two Atiroa Tuaiti, 26, fell to his death while working on a ship at the Ports of Auckland on Tuesday..
Council of Trade Unions president Richard Wagstaff said the Lyttelton worker's death was a tragedy and served to reinforce calls for an inquiry, from which national standards could be developed. Maritime Union national secretary Craig Harrison said the deaths were preventable. .

Melani grew addicted to the ‘trance’ of binge-eating: Then came the guilt
Sophie Aubrey 11:17, Apr 26 2022..Melani De Sousa likens binge-eating to being in a trance. She remembers the ritual of coming home from school and, hidden from the eyes of her parents and sister, consuming whatever she could find in the kitchen.
De Sousa, 32, lived with binge-eating disorder for about 15 years. She tells her story for the fifth episode of youth mental health podcast Enough to shed light on the illness.
It’s by far the most common type of eating disorder – it affects 47% of all people who have an eating disorder, while just 3% have anorexia and 12% have bulimia – yet it remains poorly understood. Like many people with binge-eating disorder, De Sousa experienced cycles of bingeing followed by restricting food.

NZ's mental health 'crisis' - more Kiwis struggling with wellbeing since Covid, research reveals
By Alex Spence Investigations editor 22 Apr, 2022 11:00 AM...The number of New Zealanders struggling with poor mental wellbeing has risen sharply during the Covid-19 outbreak, according to research obtained exclusively by the Herald, prompting calls from leading health figures for an urgent national recovery plan.
Polling for the Mental Health Foundation found that 36 per cent of people surveyed were experiencing poor emotional wellbeing, up from 27 per cent a year ago, an increase that the foundation says is significant and concerning.
The research adds to a body of evidence indicating that two years of unprecedented stress and disruption brought on by the coronavirus pandemic has had an enormous psychological toll on Kiwis - and that the burden is growing. Today the Herald and NZME launch a major editorial project.

nitial testing indicates some teens will fail compulsory NCEA standards because they don't use capital letters and full stops and don't know how many minutes are in an hour. and markers were worried by the number of students who did not know there were 60 minutes in an hour.
The standards are being introduced because a study revealed 40 percent of students who get NCEA level 2 are not functionally literate or numerate. Secondary Principals' Association president Vaughan Couillault said the mistakes were a worry, but could be explained by the timing of the test last year and who sat it.

Hard one to swallow': Calls for reduced tax on beer amid biggest increase in over 30 years
Molly Swift - 22/04/2022...Breweries say the increase in beer tax this week will be a hard one to swallow as the largest beer tax in recent memory is on the cards. The beer excise tax is set to increase by the highest level in over 30 years, with an increase of $28.3 million more than last year.
"The beer excise increase could not come at a worse time for brewers and consumers, with the effects of COVID-19 still holding sway on the economy, the cost of living squarely in focus for New Zealanders and the hospitality sector far from being back to normal.
At a time when New Zealanders are facing an economic crunch, the increase to beer tax is a hard one to swallow," Firth and Kees said. Under the projected increase the excise tax would now be $83.08 per keg, $0.55 per bottle and $0.71 per pint - all before GST is added.

Sealord calls for fishing ban at some undersea mountains
Nelson-based fishing company Sealord are proposing a ban on fishing at the majority of the undersea mountains in New Zealand's exclusive economic zone. Sealord chief executive Doug Paulin said the "Seamounts Count" proposal, would see at least 127 of the 142 known seamounts protected within a conservation envelope.
It would mean that only the 15 remaining seamounts could be trawled. Seamounts are volcanic features which rise at least 1000m high off the seafloor. Collectively, they form the largest wildlife habitat on earth, covering more of the earth's surface than rainforests, deserts, or tundra.
Fish congregate on the slopes of seamounts, as do corals and crustaceans, to eat the nutrients that are carried upwards from the depths of the oceans toward the warm surface. Currently, just over 50 percent of the seamounts in New Zealand's exclusive economic zone are protected.,

Burton's boat switch for Olympic return
Murray Wenzel -25/04/2022..Olympic gold medallist Tom Burton has set sail for Paris 2024, but in a different boat after missing a chance to defend his laser title at the Tokyo Games. World champion Burton stormed to victory at Rio's 2016 Olympics in the single-handed dinghy.
But he was a victim of Australia's incredible depth in the class when Matt Wearn pipped him for the only spot in Tokyo and went on to win gold of his own. Always of the belief his slight frame was better suited to the two-handed 49er class.
This week's event will be the first time they've competed against more than a handful of boats, let alone against international-standard competition. And it's not a simple switch, the high-performance skiff design of the 49er requiring both crew to sail while cantilevered over the water, rather than sitting inside the laser.

Teen sex offender targeted young women at parties, wants to keep his name secret
Edward Gay 18:16, Apr 26 2022 A sexual predator and “skilled manipulator”, who raped and abused girls and young women at parties, has been sentenced to a year’s home detention.
The court heard how the teenager and three of his four survivors had initially met at school.
He would approach girls and young women, often at parties when they had been drinking. Some of the women were isolated in a bedroom at a party before being abused.
They, and their mothers, pleaded with Judge Claire Ryan to name their attacker. A mother of one of the survivors said the teenager was now attending the
University of Auckland and had access to young women. She said her daughter was “staggeringly drunk” while the teenager was sober. The attack had left her daughter suicidal.
