I enjoy making homemade treats for the dogs because I know exactly what the ingredients are. Makes me feel a little better about feeding the goodies to them. I seemed to have hit upon another winner in these little muffins. You can make them in regular sized muffin tins if you have a larger dog. Although mine would be exceptionally happy if I made them larger, the reality is, this is just their size.
The nice thing is that these use ingredients I always have on hand. If you don't typically keep unsweetened applesauce on hand it's something to consider - dogs love it and it's a wonderful little treat on it's own.
Apple-Cinnamon Mini "Muttins"
Makes 42 minis or 12 large
1 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1 Tablespoon baking powder
3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
3/4 cup honey
2 cups unsweetened applesauce
1/2 cup Canola oil
2 large eggs
1/2 cup skim milk
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease a 12-cup regular muffin pan or 2 mini muffin pans with nonstick vegetable spray.
In a medium bowl, stir together the flours, baking powder and cinnamon. Set aside. In a large bowl whisk together the honey, applesauce, oil and eggs until well blended. Whisk in the milk. Add the dry ingredients, stirring until combined.
Fill the muffin cups 3/4 full. Bake for 25 - 28 minutes for regular muffins or 12 - 14 minutes for the minis, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Cool to room temperature. Serve.
These can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for 4 days. Alternatively, they can be kept in the freezer for 2 months. Lay them on a wax paper lined baking sheet. Freeze for 1 hour, then transfer to a freezer container or sealed bag. You can take out as many as you need without un-thawing the entire batch.
