I thought I would do a fun little post about my personal make up bag.
I did this a few years ago when I was starting out in counter make up artistry as opposed to freelance. I wanted to see how much my 'tastes' have changed and what this has cost me. I've tried to find the original post since and can't sadly. I think it would have been around 2012.
The object of the game is to open my bag and cost the items in it to see what I'm spending and how much it's worth.
So without further ado. Lets consider my face......
I always start my routine with my moisturiser and eye cream.
Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturising Gel £30
I love this. I have always noticed an improvement in my skin while I am using it. I use the gel as it absorbs quite quickly meaning I can work on top of it. It doesn't leave a greasy residue on my skin. I have two bottles of this floating around the house but this is the one that goes everywhere with me.
Origins Ginzing Refreshing Eye Cream £20
I again have two pots of this cream. I like the idea of the ginzing adding to the brightening effect. However, I am really not a big eye cream fan and struggle to remind myself to use it. It's not the fault of the cream but rather my laziness. I love it after the gym where my skin feels a bit battered.
After I've prepped my skin, I then decide to skip a layer. I don't use primer as I don't see the point. I've never found one I feel loyal to. So I just let this skin in while I move on.
I normally use my shadows next. I haven't included them in the photos because, I change my make up look every day. I'm going to estimate here that I use at least three MAC shadows in getting my smokey eye look on.
MAC Eyeshadows £13 each x3.
MAC Painterly Paint Pot £16
This is the best primer for eyes I've ever used. I love it. I often change between Soft Oche and Painterly because they make really good neutral primers. In fact I have seen girls use Soft Oche as a color corrector on blemishes which I am keen to try! I cant' stress enough how long painterly lasts either.
MAC BLACK TRACK GEL LINER £15
I switch between eyeliners occasionally. I like Black Track as it takes forever to use up! I also like that it glides when you apply it. It can be tricky to use and requires a brush but I'm willing to put in the extra time with this one.
MAC FELINE BLACK PENCIL £14
I cannot find a darker black pencil. I know I'm using a lot of MAC but its just how it is! I pop this in the waterline to finish a smokey eye.
Once my primer and eye look is on I switch to mascara.
MAC Extreme Dimension Mascara. £19
I tried once to have a different mascara and that didn't work out. I've never managed to replicate this mascara. I am not worried about black or extra black - I just like this one.
Now that my eyes and lashes are done, I need to move to my face again.
MAC STUDIO FIX FOUNDATION £26.50
I have been wearing this foundation since I was about 21. I can't beat it. I go through stages were I prefer a lighter foundation like Face and Body but I always come back to this. I can't beat it. I find that my skin is too bad for me to not need a fuller coverage at the minute.
CATRICE COSMETICS CONCEALER £-
I was sent this product so I am not sure of the price. I do like it though. They are on sale in Ireland so I can pick some up when I'm back home. I like it because it's high coverage without being really heavy. I place small dots around the eyes before blending it in. I don't tend to use this on spots or other areas as the color is slightly darker then my skin. This is fine on my dark circles that need the warmth provided by the darker shade.
MAC BLUSHER PEACHES £18
I found this in my kit looking sorry for itself a few weeks ago. I started trying to see if I could finish it up as there is already a big hole in it.
I love this shade as its light enough for my pale skin but build-able. I am not very loyal to blushers. I treat them like eyeshadows and I move around a lot. This will be replaced by something new next time.
MAC BLUSHER TAUPE SATIN £18
THIS IS THE ONE. If you are pale like me then you understand how difficult it is to get a good contour product. This was a limited edition that came out with an old collection years ago. I still have one left and I'm rationing it out. This not only does my contour but the crease color in my eye look. I love it. I will struggle to replace this when it officially goes.
MAC WHISPER OF GILT HIGHLIGHTER £26
THIS IS ALSO THE ONE. I know there is a cult following for this product. I can't understand why it isnt a forever product already! I love it because its high shine but still looks natural. I'm getting near the end of it and this is the last one I have left too. I will be switching to Extreme Dimension highlighters once this is finished.
CATRICE COSMETICS BRONZER £-
Full disclosure, I was also sent this one as well. However I love it. Going back to my previous complaint about being pale and strong powders, this is why I love this one. It is just the right shade for me. It's light but I can get away with it. I plan on replacing it soon as I broke the lid and can't carry it with me without powder going everywhere!
I leave my brows almost until last. Everyone knows how much eyebrows can upset the morning if they don't go well.
MAC FLUIDLINE BROW GEL 'DIRTY BLONDE' £16
I love this. It's technically a bit on the dark side since I started bleaching up my hair again. However I love a good dark brow with blonde. It's fun. I love that you can get that really defined look with this product. It can take a while to perfect as it takes a steady hand but I've been a convert since I first tried it. Nothing else has come close. I got frustrated with how fast I whipped through pencils.
BOBBI BROWN EYEBROW PENCIL £17
I do like this pencil. I use it to sharp edges on my brows or top up where I feel the gel hasn't settled well. I don't really like it on its own as I find it's very tricky to get the definition from a pencil that I like. I plan on switching this once this is gone though as the sharpening annoys me. I prefer a twist up pencil so I'm going back to MAC on this one.
LIPSTICK £16
I don't have just one brand or one color. I have everything from Bobbi Brown to Smashbox to MAC to NYX. I really can't choose an everyday favorite. So like the eyeshadows, I've chosen to use an estimate price and not picture them as it's too much!
FINAL COST OF MAKE UP ALONE - £290
Now we talk about brushes......
So the make is only a bit of it. I need things to apply it.
Here is the list:
MAC LIMITED EDITION (Archie's girls collection) CONTOUR SHORT HANDLE £26
MAC LIMITED EDITION (Archie's girls Collection) BRONZER BRUSH £34.50
(*note* These were bought in a set. I cannot get the set again so would need to spend full price amount on what the brushes cost normally.)
BOBBI BROWN EYE BROW BRUSH £22.50 x 2
MAC 217 BLENDING BRUSH £20
MAC 239 EYE BRUSH £20
ILLAMASQUA CHEEK BRUSH £26
TOM FORD SHADE AND HIGHLIGHT BRUSH £58 (I know)
TOTAL BRUSH TALLY - 229.50
TOTAL COST OF MY EVERYDAY MAKE UP BAG - £519.50
Conclusion - I know that this isn't taking into account my discounts for being a MUA but we are discussing worth here. What the average person would pay. This is a frightening amount as I have a whole bunch of stuff that I don't use daily. I know it's my job but I think this is a sign I may need to slow down on buying things.
I don't regret any of this stuff as I love it. I don't really buy clothes that much any more so this is where my wages go. I am not afraid to use cheaper brands as evident by my use of Catrice but a lot of my bag consist of MAC because of my job and also because I love it. I do use a lot of other brands and I'm working on getting different brands to balance it out a bit. I've invested in a lot of Illamasqua and Urban Decay for this reason recently.
I haven't taken into account my nightly remover routine but I think that's a job for another day!
